Hello Sunset Youth Lacrosse Families-
Happy New Year! We are excited to roll out the new season to you and your son and/or daughter. We are always trying to improve the experience for our athletes and their parents, so feedback is always welcome!
Here are a few critical things to know:
1) New Online Platform
As you will soon see, we have moved to a new online platform. Key members of our board have worked closely with the SHS Lacrosse Board to make this change seamless for you. The new platform will allow for “one stop shopping”, as you will be able to register your child, find game and practice schedules, get updates from coaches and contact anyone on the board at any time. We partnered with Team Snap on the new platform, as we know most of you have experience with Team Snap. Please contact either Beth Zappitello or Stephanie Paris with any questions on the new platform.
2) Early Bird Registration
We will continue to have “early bird” registration. Early bird pricing will be open until January 15. After that time you will be charged the regular registration fee. Please contact Stephanie Paris, our Registrar, with any questions.
3) Season Kicks-off Practices
The season again kick off with age group practices before we break the athletes into teams. This helps us ensure that we balance the teams as well as we can. And yes, we will try to manage all friend and carpool requests, but as they get older, this gets harder to do as we always strive to have even teams in terms of talent and overall number of players. We will let you know in February when these practices will begin.
4) Coaching Education
This season will have a focus on coaching education. Our coaches will learn from the pros on how to coach kids in a positive manner from the Positive Coaching Alliance; will learn how to coach the elements of lacrosse from better drills to X’s and O’s from US Lacrosse; and will be encouraged to attend other free coaching clinics brought to us by our local club programs. Details will follow on this from our Coaching Coordinator, Brian Johnson.
5) Select Teams (boys)
We will have one select team for the 7/8 grade group and one for the 5/6 age group. We are currently determining the final format for the season for each age group and we will share that as we begin the season kick-off practices. The select tryouts will mostly likely be the first weekend in March. These tryouts are open to all, but please keep in mind that these teams are highly competitive and play in three or four high caliber tournaments. There is an additional registration fee to play on a select team to cover coaching costs. There might also be a small per player tournament fee to help us offset the cost of the tournaments. Any questions, please contact Beth Zappitello.
6) New Player Clinics
Once again, the Tualatin Valley Youth Lacrosse League (TVYLL) will conduct a one day clinic for any and all new players who want to come try lacrosse for the first time. The New Player Clinic is free and fun! Kids learn the basics of lacrosse from youth league coaches in a no-pressure environment. The date is set for January 21. Details to follow shortly.
7) Pre-season Open Field Sessions
We will be hosting open field workouts at Sunset High School on Sundays in January, starting Jan. 8. More info to come this week.
1st – 4th grade girls + boys: 12 pm – 1 pm
5th – 8th grade girls: 1pm – 2:30pm
5th – 8th grade boys: 2:30 pm – 4:00 pm
As always, our goal is to bring our love of lacrosse to kids of all levels, from a 1st grader or an 8th grader trying the sport for the fist time to those who play almost year-round. We keep it fun, have the kids learn how to play lacrosse and be great teammates, and we want them to come back each year because they loved the experience.
Come join us in 2017 for the best season yet! As always please send this along to your friends who have kids that might not have tried the sport of lacrosse. It is once again the fastest growing sport in America! Come be a part of the SYL community. It’s an awesome experience with great people!
Please reach out with any questions, concerns or suggestions.
Thanks and See You Soon,
